My friend asked me why we celebrate New Year's. He argued that it's a pointless holiday, because humans invented time, and why celebrate something that isn't real?
I think it's to celebrate time to come. To mark the difference between past and future.. I think it's to give us optimism and opportunity to leave the past behind and look foward to what can be and what will be ahead of us. I agree that the marker itself doesn't exist, because we made it up. But past and future still exist. Time is the line between the two. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to distinguish between them clearly. So I think it's a tangible holiday for the intangible concepts of new beginnings and opportunity.
